May 05, 2013 · Hit cone 07 at 3:45-4 hours. Cone 3 at 5-5:15 hours- at this point I make adjustments to even out the kiln if necessary. I want all cone 5's to fall together. Once cone 7 begins to fall I pull the passive dampers to slow the draft of the kiln, I want about 2 hours from cone 7-9.5.

Apr 03, 2012 · No fussy around with the firing of this glaze and I have found that it fires well no matter what the firing schedule, but I would recommend a hold for 1/2 hr at around 900c on the way back down. It should be said that C/4.5.6 reduction firing can exactly duplicate C/9-10 reduction fired porcelain, but that is another discussion. In my view there is no point whatever in firing to C/9-10 oxidation for white clay bodies (or stoneware either, for that matter). Everything you can possibly achieve at C/9-10 is possible at C/4.5.6.

I more or less follow the "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes" schedule with my 4.6 cu.ft kiln, and the whole cycle takes about 12 hours (IIRC, 8 hours of firing plus 4 hours of gradual cooling to 1400F). Cone 6 is roughly 1220 degrees Celsius. Cone 6 can, however, be 1240C if you fire quickly over the last hour of your firing. Cone 9 is roughly 1260C, or 1280C, or somewhere in between, depending on the rate of climb. So part of the problem we are having at the moment is working out what temperature to fire our cone 6 glazes to. The kiln used for the testings and developing of the firing schedule for the Cones 5-6 crystal glazes was a Unique Kilns Model 2430, having a maximum temperature of 2350°F. Several firing schedules were developed and tested. The firing which seemed to provide the best results brought the glazes to their maturing temperature in seven hours.
